Quiz: Pay It or Question It? 15 Medical Bills, One Decision Each

Not every medical bill is wrong, and not every one should be paid the day it arrives. Below are fifteen pieces of paper a patient might find in the mailbox. For each, choose one of three moves, then tap Next. Keep count of how many you get right. The last page explains your score.

Bill 1 of 15

Hospital statementDate of service: 9 days ago
Total charges: $1,850.00
Insurance payments: PENDING
Amount due now: $1,850.00

You have insurance and gave the hospital your card. What is the right move?

Correct. Not quite. “Pending” means your insurer has not finished processing the claim. The $1,850 is the full charge before any network discount or insurance payment. Many billing systems send a statement automatically at this stage. Wait for the Explanation of Benefits from your plan, which usually arrives within a few weeks, then compare. If you pay now and the final amount is lower, you will be chasing a refund.
