EmailSubject: “FINAL NOTICE: premium payment failed.” The message says your health coverage will be cancelled in 24 hours unless you pay now, with a button leading to healthcare-gov.secure-billing-center.com.
Legitimate, a scam, or impossible to tell?
Correct. Not quite. Read the web address from right to left. The site that owns this link is “secure-billing-center.com.” The “healthcare-gov” at the front is decoration that anyone can add. Federal sites end in .gov. The 24-hour threat is the second sign: insurers must give notice and a grace period before ending coverage for a missed payment. Premiums are paid to your insurance company, through its own website or the number on your card.
