Quiz: Covered or Not? 15 Things People Assume Health Insurance Pays For

Most people learn what their health insurance leaves out on the day they need it. This quiz gets there first. Fifteen items, one per page. For each, decide whether a typical health plan pays for it, then tap Next. Keep count of how many you get right. The last page explains your score.

Item 1 of 15

A breast pumpA new mother wants an electric breast pump to use when she returns to work. She has a Marketplace plan.

Does health insurance pay for it?

Correct. Not quite. Under the Affordable Care Act, most health plans must cover breastfeeding equipment and support at no cost to the mother. The plan decides the details: whether the pump is rented or yours to keep, manual or electric, and which suppliers to use. Call the plan before buying one at a store, because a pump bought on your own is often not reimbursed. Many plans let you order during the last weeks of pregnancy.
